The painted hoe

This is the painted hoe story that we read in class, our Teacher gave us some
questions about the story. and these are my answers below.


Question 1. Describe the different types of waka in your own words.


  1. Waka hourua - is a large kind of waka.
  2. Waka tete - that were used for fishing and to carry people’s good’s and a lot of people.
  3. Waka tiwai - they only carry a couple of people.
  4. Waka taua - can carry over 200 people on the waka.


Question 2. Why do you think Hoe were “highly valued?”

I think hoa were highly valued
because some can carry a lot of people, and a lot of food
And Because Maori could use the hoa to travel at great speed and
because of their weight and shape. Also Because they represent things  
from the natural environment.
